Game Design

Students in Junior High had the opportunity to engage in hands-on “systems-thinking” earlier this year as they manipulated elements of online games and observed the changes in play that occurred as a result. Having learned to construct games that balance challenge with reward, many students opted to take it a step further and design a game for the National Stem Challenge contest. Taylor Bragg-Brock (MMS’11) designed her game with the idea of educating players about diabetes. Using games as a learning tool is an ancient concept, but one that is often overlooked. Taylor is currently in a dialogue with Cindy Schlough, Director of Strategic Partnerships with the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality about the possibility of using her game to help young people in the Milwaukee area better understand the disease.
