ART & SCULPTURE
Hang-Ups: Mobile Sculpture and Kinetic Art
July 2–6, Ages 6-9
Mobiles unite balanced parts capable of motion hung freely in space. They are referred to as kinetic art because they incorporate actual movement as an integral aspect of the design. Sound simple? Think again! Combining physics concepts such as center of gravity and balance together with the history, process, and artistic techniques of mobile design, students will design and create their own versions of exciting moving sculptures. This is a wonderful chance to learn how to use round-nose and needle-nose pliers to bend and twist wire to bring together objects such as drinking straws, paper clips, photos, and found objects to create mobiles depicting animals, airplanes, or anything that strikes your fancy! Join us in embarking on this artistic journey into free motion.
The Monster Course: Papier-mâché Monsters
[THIS CLASS IS FULL] July 23–27, Ages 6-9
The ‘rule’ for papier-mâché application is that only one layer should be applied at a time, but in this class students will apply several layers at a time of thick papier-mâché, first molded with their hands and later reworked through sanding or trimming with a file. Possibly the messiest summer project in the world, we will use this method to make dinosaur monsters from the Triassic and Jurassic periods. The dinosaurs with protruding horns and body armour give us a great opportunity to experiment with texture and color. Though we don’t have the direct fossil evidence to know for sure what color the dinosaurs were, our students will use their imaginations and paintbrushes to create their own versions camouflaged subtly in the vegetation or wildly colorful to scare and intimidate their foes.
Hand Building with Mudflat Clay
July 30 – August 3, Ages 6-9
Do you like to build with your hands (or even play in the mud)? This course introduces children to the wonderful medium of clay using a variety of hand-building projects, including animals, abstract sculpture, containers, tiles, and more. Coiling and pinching techniques, as well as the basics of artistic design used in embellishing and glazing, will enable children to create lovely final projects such as a flowerpot with a drip dish and a matching vase.
Eco-Crafting
August 6-10, Ages 6-9
Calling all artists, conservationists, and earth lovers! This course lets you bring the natural world indoors as you create sustainable art projects from natural and recyclable materials. Learning about our carbon footprints and what the Earth needs from us has inspired us to create artworks and practical objects using the recycle-and-reuse formula that used to be the norm. In a time-honored way, we will turn old scraps into new and beautiful artworks, including a vessel made of sticks, a hanging pendant light using recycled plastics, and the construction of a reusable lunch sack using grocery bags. Show your eco-awareness, become one with nature, and decorate your personal space at the same time! This course includes a trip to a recycling center.
COOKING
The Curious Chef
[THIS CLASS IS FULL] July 2–6, Ages 6-9
Take your taste buds on a culinary adventure around the world! Students in this session will make homemade meals using recipes from Africa all the way to Asia. Our chefs-in-training will learn ways to help their families prepare healthy meals using a variety of age-appropriate cooking tools and recipes that will delight their families and lunchboxes. Our grand finale will include a friendly Iron Chef competition, complete with guest judges.

We will also study the art of authentic Mexican piñatas, and each child will create his or her own piñata to take home.
MATH & SCIENCE
Math Boot Camp
July 16-20, Ages 6-9
Research shows that students lose almost three months worth of math computation skills in the summer months. The focus of Math Boot Camp is to reinforce the math taught during the year and add a few tricks before the school year begins again. Each session begins with a personalized math assessment so drills and goals can be individualized for the week. The class offers a wide array of fun and engaging math games, foundation drills, and conceptual exercises, along with practice that emphasizes both speed and accuracy using hands-on, visual, virtual, and verbal techniques that tap into all learning styles.

The musical, Annie, is the delightful, time-honored story of Little Orphan Annie, adopted by Daddy Warbucks, but then stolen away by the dreadful orphanage mistress, Mrs. Hannigan. We are thrilled that this production will be directed by Nancy Visintainer-Armstrong, the renowned choreographer for Off The Wall Theatre. Join us for this exciting, intensive theatre experience!
