June 21 – 25: Be a Mathlete

Students who know all of their math facts make fewer computation errors and learn future mathematical operations with ease and speed. This class begins by helping students memorize math facts in all operations through 20 using a fun Math Bee format. We will also use math games like Crypto, Math Maze, Magic Square, The Five Color Puzzle, and Number Puzzle to support test-taking and study skills. This course will teach enough math to help you for a whole year in school!

June 21 - July 9: Drama and Set design – The Boy Friend (3 week class)

The Boy Friend is a musical by Sandy Wilson. Set in the carefree world of the French Riviera in the Roaring 1920s, The Boy Friend is a parody of many 1920s shows. The main role of The Boy Friend is the character of Polly Browne, a rich heiress, who attends a finishing school for wealthy girls on the French Riviera. Polly is the only girl at the school that does not have a boyfriend because her father, Percival, thinks that any boy interested in his daughter is obviously only concerned with her inheritance. Just before the Carnival Ball, Polly encounters an attractive messenger boy named Tony. She soon convinces him that she is merely a poor secretary. They fall for each other, but then Tony runs off, and Polly sadly suspects that he must be a thief. But Tony shows up at the Ball and reveals that he is quite rich and truly in love with Polly. She then reveals her true identity and the two are able to be happy together.

June 28 – July 2: Cyber Safety and Skills that Impress

When used safely, technology brings students amazing educational opportunities. In this session, we coach students on how to surf the web and use social networking sites appropriately, protect their identities, download and share videos safely, and identify and avoid Internet hoaxes and e-mail pranks. They will then learn power skills for boosting presentations and academic papers. This program includes assessments, quizzes, a safety pledge, and a cyber manual that each student will make to take home.

July 6 – 9: Baking Breads from Around the World

Fresh bread is prized for its taste, aroma, quality and texture. It is also one of the oldest prepared foods dating back to the Neolithic era. How did early man learn to make bread? What cultural and political significance does bread play in the modern day cultures of East Asia, Europe, or Africa? In this class students will learn about the history of bread, and will make a variety of breads: leavened bread as white or rye, quick sweet bread as zucchini, and unleavened bread as matzos or tortillas. Along with your breads, you will make an accompanying cookbook to take home with you at the end of the week so that you can continue making bread at home.

July 12- 16:

Explore the Universe

The scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) study all aspects of our universe, from the smallest particles of energy to the biggest questions concerning its evolution, size, and structure. Students in this course use official NASA learning resources to study and analyze the Big Bang, Dark Matter, Black Holes, the life cycle of stars, the planets in other solar systems, and the makeup of galaxies. Using computer technology, we will study and discuss the same images analyzed by the world’s greatest astrophysicists to explore the structure, evolution, and destiny of our universe.

 Wipe Out

Our version of WIPE OUT will feature student contestants divided into teams that try to make their way through tough obstacle courses. Our athletic coaches will begin by training each team to improve their speed, agility, endurance, and strength by practicing each skill and moving you through smaller courses. Then the races will begin! If you love being athletic, and falling into shallow pools of water, getting sprayed with water color paint, crawling through tubes, rolling in sand, jumping over hurdles, balancing, swinging, and running as fast as lightning, then this work out/wipe out class has your name on it!

 July 19 – 23:

Wonderful Wild Wacky Writing Workshop

Are you the next Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss? Have you ever written a story with 2 other people? In under 5 minutes? What is an alliteration? How many adverbs can you list? In this class students will learn simple poetry forms and creative writing techniques that will help them during the school year and beyond. Acrostic, limerick, haiku and shape poems as well as short stories and character sketches will be compiled in a book that each student will be proud to take home. The week will culminate in a coffeehouse/cocoahouse reading of the children's work which parents are invited to attend.

Kids and Clay Pottery Studio

For the first time clay artist, or those of you who have been there, done that, and would like to do it again, this class provides you with a chance to create cups, bowls, flower pots, creature sculptures and even wind chimes in our large, well equipped art studio.

 July 26 – 30:

Tchoukball

A new game played all over the world, Tchoukball is a fast and complex running and passing game that incorporates the rules of three: take no more than three steps with the ball in your possession, hold the ball no longer than three seconds, and pass the ball to three teammates before you score on the fun instant rebound net. This awesome game builds teamwork and passing skills while getting you running and moving. For more information, visit http://www.tchoukball.net/game/index.htm. We guarantee you’ll love it!

Wildlife Paint and Sculpture

Using acrylic paint, and giant boulders of your choice, you will create an animal sculpture for your garden or indoors for your home. Using big and bold rocks, students will learn the art of seeing forms in objects of nature. Together with our instructor, you will look at your collection and decide, “What looks like an eye? A face? A foot?” Then, you will sketch and use acrylic paint to create your sculpture. If you like to learn about animals and draw and paint, then you will enjoy this one-of-a-kind art experience

 August 2 – 6:

Great Big Enormous Whopping Cookie Jars (2 week class)

Using your bare hands, a ton of clay, plaster, glaze, carving tools and some muscle, you’ll make a cookie jar in the form of a mammal from any continent. To begin, you’ll receive lessons in drawing your beast with anatomical precision. Then you’ll pour some plaster to create the initial sculpture. Finally, using porcelain clay, you’ll start carving. The result is a life sized animal jar (ok, not really life sized because elephants, giraffes, ostriches and the like might be hard to fit in your kitchen). This is a super messy class: clay, plaster, glaze paint, but the outcome is worth it!

Hoop It Up

The Hoop It Up class is a fundamental basketball program that focuses on teaching beginners the basics including shooting, defense, floor spacing, passing and dribbling. If you love basketball or are getting ready to join a team and want a leg up, then this clinic is perfect for you.

August 9 – 13: Walk like an Egyptian

Travel back in time 3,000 years to the banks of the Nile and learn about one of history's most fascinating ancient cultures. Create your own Book of the Dead, write your name in hieroglyphs and create a diorama of a burial chamber. Students will also explore pharaohs, pyramids, mummies, Egyptian gods and goddesses and much more!
