In Memory of Margreet Fleege

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the death of Margreet Fleege, lifelong Montessorian and beloved Milwaukee Montessori School teacher, tutor, and mentor for nearly fifty years.

After retiring in 2016, Margreet learned that she had cancer, and she spent the last 20 months in treatment hoping to reclaim some of her perennial vigor. Her spirits were good during her treatment, and she bore her illness with grace. In fact, up until last year, she was a regular presence at school proofreading report cards and offering colleagues her characteristically sage advice. In the last six months, however, her illness overtook her, and she died peacefully on September 28, 2018, at the Aurora at Home Zilber Family Hospice.

Margreet emigrated from Holland to the United States after attending Montessori school herself and then completing her Montessori teacher training in Amsterdam in 1965. After three years of teaching at the Garden Gate Montessori School near Grafton, Wisconsin, Margreet joined the faculty at Milwaukee Montessori School in 1969, where she taught 3-6-year-old children in our Casa dei Bambini for more than forty years.

Margreet was a gentle, stable, and reassuring teacher who touched the lives of countless children and families with her kindness and quiet confidence, giving her students the strong intellectual and emotional foundation from which they could go on to great heights. Ever a champion of the Montessori method and materials, she used her many talents including sewing, crocheting, cross-stitching, and knitting to add warmth and beauty to the learning environment. Her son, Christopher, began his education here in 1970 and was a member of Milwaukee Montessori School’s first 8th grade graduating class.

We feel truly blessed to have had Margreet within our school community for such a long time. So much of what we enjoy about this school has her hand and heart in it. She was always generous with her time and talents, whether in tutoring children after school, mentoring new faculty members and assisting them make beautiful materials, or helping to plan and facilitate the countless special events that our school enjoyed over the years. Most notable of course was her deep care and concern for the generations of children and parents who became members of our school community. She considered every child special and worthy of attention, and she remembered each one with delight when they would come to visit her. She will be deeply missed.

A truly devoted and steadfast teacher, friend, mother, and grandmother, we will always remember Mrs. Fleege as a true standard bearer for Milwaukee Montessori School.

Sincerely,
Monica Van Aken, Ed.D.
Head of School
