Sheila Higgins joined Milwaukee Montessori School in August 2025. Originally from Iowa, Sheila is a veteran educator who comes from a family of twelve teachers. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Teaching and Learning. For the past six years, she has shared her passion for the natural world with students, inspired by her own insatiable curiosity about how biology explains life around us.
Sheila was drawn to MMS because it felt like home, like the independent school where she began her own teaching career as both an alumna and later as a faculty member. She values the Montessori philosophy of supporting the whole child and thrives on the energy of private independent schools.
Outside the classroom, Sheila enjoys baking, hiking, and gardening, and loves spending time with her partner and pets: her dogs, Indy and Willow, and Henry, the painted turtle. Since moving to Wisconsin, she has delighted in exploring the state’s great outdoors, from Lion’s Gorge to Door County, and looks forward to discovering more of the Midwest’s natural beauty along its many hiking trails.
